“One More”

As we were driving down a dusty road in a scarcely populated area of rural Kenya, I looked out my window and was surprised to see a small group of very young children staring back at me. Their faces were illuminated by big smiles as they ran after our bus as fast as their tiny limbs could possibly take them. I raised my left hand and waved at them with a smile on my face. They started to laugh as they raised their own hands to return the gesture. Finally, the children stopped running after our bus, and I turned around to continue admiring the beautiful landscape that surrounded me.

Suddenly, I heard a rustling sound in the trees to my right, and I noticed another young boy staring back at me. He was smaller than the others and he wasn’t smiling or waving. He simply stared at me with a sad look in his eyes. He looked very unhealthy, and even worse, he looked unhappy. I forced myself to smile and wave at him, but his face stayed blank. I realized that I was looking into the eyes of a child who had no hope, but who lived in fear. He was a child who had no money and no education.

At that moment, I made the most important realization of my life: There will always be “One More”. One more child who lives in fear of the unknown, one more child who has no hope, one more child who has a pressing health problem, and one more child who doesn’t have the chance to receive a much needed education.

I realized that I must devote the rest of my life to putting an end to the dreaded thought of “One More”. I want to make a difference and I’m going to stand up. I’m going to care for every child that needs my help and I’m going to be the change. I’m ready to put an end to “One More”.
